RIFTS, OCEANS, AND VOLCANOES - PIEDMONT AND SOUTH MOUNTAIN GEOLOGY IN YORK AND ADAMS COUNTIES

The 2023 Field Conference will be based in the historic Gettysburg area and will feature three days of field trips.

Thursday, October 5

  • Pre-conference trips will be held throughout the region of the conference.

Friday, October 6

  • The conference will kick off with a morning ride on the Northern Central Railway train traveling from New Freedom, northward 15 miles along the York County Heritage Rail Trail. There will be featured stops along the way. Older published data will be used along this route as no recent research has been conducted in this area.

  • In the afternoon the conference will visit the RHI Magnesita quarry in West York to see geology exposed in this part of the Lowlands Section.

Saturday, October 7

  • The conference will head to South Mountain where the volcanics of the Catoctin Formation will be the featured items. We will also see the work completed by the PA State System of Higher Education (PASSHE) Geology Field Experience students in summer 2023.
