Dear members and friends,

This month’s HAGS/AEG talk will be at Dickinson College 4/23.  Thanks to Noel Potter and AEG for getting this organized!

Urban Landslides -- Challenges to Forensic Engineering Geologists, 1PDH

By 2012 Richard H. Jahns Distinguished Lecturer in Engineering Geology,

Dr. Scott Burns, Professor of Geology, Portland State University

Monday, April 23, 7:00 PM, Dickinson College, Althouse Hall, Room 106

Scott is the author or co-author of two books, over 80 articles, and over 200 published abstracts.  He was president of AEG in 2002-2003, chair of the Engineering Geology Division of GSA, treasurer of the Quaternary Geology and Geomorphology Division of GSA, and has received numerous awards.

The Jahns Lectureship is sponsored by AEG and the GSA Engineering Geology Division.  Its purpose is to provide funding for distinguished engineering geologists to present lectures at colleges and universities in order to increase awareness of students about careers in engineering geology.

Althouse, on the Dickinson campus, is 3 blocks west of the square in the center of Carlisle.  It is in the block south of W High Street and east of N College Street.  Althouse is #13 on the campus map at:  http://dickinson.edu/uploadedFiles/dickinson_campus_map.pdf

We are not at this time coordinating a dinner, so hope to just see you at the talk!

 Upcoming HAGS/AEG Events:

May 12th field trip:

Bill Roman, Gannett Fleming, Inc. is organizing the HAGS May Canoe/Kayak Dellville to Duncannon field trip, 3PDH.  Note the date is May 12th (previously I said 5th). 10:00AM-5:00PM. The 2012 spring field trip of the Harrisburg Area Geological Society intends to explore the lower reach of Sherman’s Creek from Dellville to Duncannon in Perry County, Pennsylvania. Should water conditions on Sherman’s Creek be unfavorable (too low), an alternative trip is available on the Susquehanna River from Duncannon to Marysville. Both trips cover a distance of approximately 7.5 miles. No formal stops are planned; however, a field trip guidebook with stream log and geologic maps will be provided. The trip will provide great opportunities for participants to observe a myriad of fluvial and mass-wasting processes as we follow the water’s course through the deformed and eroded strata of the Cove syncline. Please let us know if you are tentatively planning to attend, a.s.a.p., and then fill out the form before our drop-dead deadline of 4/30.
