HAGS- Harrisburg Area Geological Society

The HAGS logo comes from the Society's flag. The flag is patterned after one for a geological society seen by member Ed Koppe in Challa, Bolivia. The flag has been flown on field trips in Iceland, Wales, and England, and at least one wedding of two HAGS members.

The Harrisburg Area Geological Society was organized for the purpose of stimulating geologic thought, advancing and disseminating geologic knowledge, and provide fellowship among geologists and others interested in the earth sciences within the greater Harrisburg area.

To this end, the Society holds regular monthly meetings with speakers, September through May on the second Thursday of each month. Other Society activities include joint meetings with other area societies, such as the Association of Engineering Geologists, the ASCE Geotechnical Group, and the Association for Women Geoscientists. Members organize local field trips (usually in late spring), and occasional extended field trips to other parts of the United States and overseas. Past extended field trips have visited the Grand Canyon, Iceland, England and Wales, and the Basin and Range Province of the western U.S. A monthly newsletter is sent to all members with information on these events.
